Adam Johnson, a NHL player from America, died after a freak accident in the ice rink. He was caught up in a collision which the other player had his feet in the air, which unfortunately cut his neck (I saw the video of commentators discussing the accident)

    Such a tragedy

Neck guards are going to be compulsory in the English League. I don't know why they weren't in the first place

I heard that Kevlar has a good property against against such things like this, but I don't know if they've tested out on things like skating blades

I did my Masters degree in Nottingham and noticed one day these people heading towards a sports arena I had no idea about. It turns out it was this particular ice hockey club's stadium. I had no idea there was such a level of interest anywhere in the UK in the sport. But there really is.

What a shocking, tragic accident and outcome this is.Awful.

Apparently, now police are probing the incident, many people are saying this was a "deliberate act", which is even more shocking. I don't want to watch it again, I don't have the stomach to watch it

First time I've ever heard of an ice hockey player dying from such an accident. I wonder how often ice hockey players get injured by by another players skate?

The police are looking into this and there’s going to an inquest into the death

I suspect that's normal under the circumstances.

I agree with UK Man . It still seems wrong that their protective gear doesn’t include any neck/spinal cord protection.

How can it be manslaughter if it was accidental?

The incident has been described as a "freak accident" by the Panthers.

Is the term manslaughter not used to describe an accidental or an unintentional killing?

The police have probably seen a different camera angle of the incident

That's what my understanding of manslaughter is, I don't know if that's true

Under English law, and in very simple terms, it is where death has been caused unintentionally but with negligence and without due care, or let's say in this case where he might be deemed to have intended to hurt and injure him but the intent to hurt or injure has unintentionally resulted in death.

More broadly, do you remember the Costa Concordia disaster? The Captain was sentenced to 16 years for manslaughter. He was supposedly distracted by a sexy dancer that was on the Bridge with him at the time. So that would be negligence and without due care. The sentence was quite high probably because he was also a lame coward into the bargain!
