Taxi drivers in 1978, wearing open shirts, long hair and very tight jeans, like we all did in those days.

Hard to watch the military terrifying the citizens. Very hard to believe that this happened during our lifetime.

Argentina out of control under Isabel Peron in 1975. You can spot some familiar faces in this remarkable clip and in fact, we were just half way through my father's job as British naval attaché in those days. They were very dangerous times with worse to follow.

Watching now. Have you written much about your youthful days there Splinter ?

Edit: Carlos Menem's sideburns put Milei's to shame!

A little, yes. I've also used my experiences here (1974-76) as the basis for my character's youth in The Last British President.

With Milei in charge, we should see those good times return!

Splinter I sense you have more than hope, you seem to have some optimism too. Or at least a sense that everyone needs to give Milei's policies time to bear fruit.

I’m optimistic, despite the enormous, multi-level task Milei has taken on.

Personally, I was disappointed to hear in his Davos speech that he feels “feminism and environmentalism” are right down there with socialism in areas where he concentrates his disdain.

Yes he does tend to put his foot in it sometimes.

I think he probably meant it in the context that he's got far more important things to concentrate his mind on and sort out first...which to be fair he does.

His exact words and their context:

Last week, he gave a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in which he argued that unfettered capitalism is the only model to reduce poverty and that socialism, feminism and environmentalism threaten global progress by pushing government regulation.

I get the socialism but not the ''feminism'' and ''environmentalism'' if it's not way OTT.

I think it's a question of semantics. Perhaps what he really meant was the whole politically correct social groups that include feminists, gender fanatics, wokes and tree huggers?

He already closed the gender and equality ministry, as promised.

I think he dislikes 'organized' feminism more than he dislikes women.

He has surrounded himself by fairly powerful ladies in his government.

My husband's late grandfather was an amateurial photographer who took pictures of Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata and the cities he visited in the '70s-'90s. When he passed away, my husband made a website to collect and share the best works. The ones of Buenos Aires are available here.

Maybe forum members will be interested also in his videos of the UK and London (1975)

Some of the videos posted on YouTube have no audio because of copyright infringement. Of course, when the "abuelo" mounted the videos this wasn't a thing. He used Beatles' songs and famous Italian songs as soundtracks, since his 16 mm videos didn't have audio. I think my husband replaced the copyrighted songs with his songs in some of them, but it wasn't always possible to find songs that respected the spirit of the video (and the intention of the authori and family memories of watching the videos with children and grandchildren)
