Road trip in the USA

  • We’re in the middle of a 2-day drive between two major bodies of water in the middle of the USA: the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico.

The scenery is majestic around the Great Lakes, but it becomes a lot less interesting in the adjacent states, which are flat and endless, rather like the Pampas. Right now, we’re stuck in a time warp in Illinois, which is approximately 750 km from top to bottom, is pretty much my definition of eternity, though I don’t know if eternity includes windmill farms or cornfields.

  • Dang - just passed a nice swamp with cypress trees draped in Spanish moss. Never thought of photos. We’re zooming along on Day #2, and are halfway down the length of Mississippi now. Will be unloading our stuff by 6 pm BsAs time; by 7 pm, will be sipping wine on the balcony, sharing a toast with all of you!

The trip started in southern Michigan, followed by northern Indiana, before we started the Death March from North to South in Illinois.

Yesterday’s eternity in Illinois cornfields led to a few hours in Missouri, then Arkansas, then Tennessee, where we stayed overnight in Elvis’s adopted hometown of Memphis. After Mississippi, we’ll reach nirvana, aka Louisiana. Thanks to Eisenhower’s interstate highway system, we‘ll tear our way through 8 states in 2 long days of driving.

Like the Geese, fly south for the winter!!!! Did you give me a wave, when going through Batesville, MS? I55 from Arkansas up to Chicago, is one of the most boring trips I have ever taken.

  • I couldn’t agree more, about I-55, daniel . I bitched about the endless cornfields and windmill farms, but completely forgot to add that the whole length of the state is flat as an iron, and boring as HAYULL.

We did wave to you from Batesville. Didn’t you see us?

  • When I used to go on cycle tours in N America I always tended to plan them around mountainious terrain purely for the scenic value. Here where I am the now doesn't thrill me at all for cycling especially when like today it's blowing a flippin' gale!!!
