Today the New Orleans Times-Picayune ran a story about a problem Italy is having, that Louisiana would welcome: the country apparently is being overrun by blue crabs.

“Blue crabs are causing havoc in Italy right now, with a surging population of the non-native species threatening Italian fisheries, especially clams, mussels and eels. In response, Italians are being urged to reduce the crab population the old fashion way – by eating them.”

Crab is a seafood beloved in Louisiana. Restaurants and chefs are offering recipes to Italian cooks who want to do their patriotic duty to rid their country of the invasive species by presenting their families with fabulous crab cakes, marinated crab claws, crab au gratin, fried crab po’boys, crab ravigote, crab remoulade, soft-shell crabs, crab Radiatori, charbroiled crabs, crab bisque, crab salads….

serafina , do you recommend a particular coastal town we could go to, for a blue crab festival of our own making?

I don't know, Rice . I would say that crabs are welcome on any table. Perhaps someone in Italy should wise up and launch the first Blue Crab festival!

I'd far rather eat crab than ruddy pasta or pizza.

I am not a crab fan

I have traveled around the world, mainly in Europe, North America, and South America, for about 50 years.

Only one case of food poisoning in all that time

A dodgy lunch at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami.

Have never touched crab again since that dreadful day that left me in bed for three days.

GlasgowJohn , are you drawing the wrong conclusion from that bad experience Why not avoid Joe’s Stone Crab instead of actual crabs?

All shell sea food has the same effect on me. I must be allergic to it, mussels for example.

    Neither have I.

Used to hear a lot of Glaswegians use it as an excuse for not turning up to work on a Monday though.
