I thought it might be a good idea to bring this out on a new thread.
Nowt to panic about from what I've heard. Not any more serious than the other variants that crop up every so often.
According to the article, this new variant is descended from the Omicron variant, and shares its fast-spreading nature. Vaccines demonstrably lessen the danger and the actual symptoms of Covid, but don’t always prevent it entirely.
That’s where masks come in, I’m afraid. I’ve never tried to sleep in a N95 mask, but I’ll try to do it on the long flight.
Hopefully these people will be successful. 
I wish them the very best success, and fervently hope their efforts are supported by all of us whom they are trying to help, rather than sabotaged by know-nothing naysayers and conspiracy theorists.

Cardiologist friend gave us a helpful suggestion today: There’s a KN94 mask that is much more comfortable than the N95, and does the job. OK, filters out 94% rather than 95%, but that’s good enough for me!
