Tony B died today, aged 96.
One of the last crooners.
What an age.
Must admit I was never that keen on his music.
Although I don’t generally like the music of his contemporaries, I have always loved the smooth sound of Tony Bennett’s voice and his song styling. As an older person, he was exemplary in constantly stretching, growing, and staying contemporary. And he seems to have been a genuinely good and kind person all his life.
I’m going to go listen to some of his music.

You clearly didn't leave your heart in San Francisco....

I was far too young.
My parents used to play his record albums, which I thought were unbelievably square and old-timey. I discovered him myself when I was in my 20’s, and never lost appreciation for him.

Same here with Acker Bilk! My parents loved his music and we young ones always thought it was square.
Not any more!
Here's the man...
Acker Bilk! Yes, my parents played his albums too. My dad was half owner of a radio station, so the record companies sent copies of all the new releases to the station and to the two partners. We grew up awash in 50’s music, never appreciating it.

I grew up with The Beetles...Tony Bennett and his like were for the oldies.
Same here. That’s why it surprised me to “discover” Tony Bennett when I was in my 20’s.
There’s a tendency to lock into the music of our high school and university days. I’m guilty of that myself, as I just don’t enjoy rap/hiphop or a lot of other contemporary music. Most of it, if I’m being honest.
Yet I’ve learned to appreciate other genres. Jazz (some forms of it) has been growing on me. I like Dixieland and Bluegrass music. Still haven’t embraced Country music, though.

Speaking to the Sunday Herald in 2002, he said: "It might sound condescending, but it's not. It's my favourite place to play, Scotland.
"The audiences there are so much fun to perform to and as I speak to you right now, I can still remember the applause through the years that the Scots have given me."
