I was never much of a fan of Elvis, but in his later years he would occasionally "sing straight" as he does here. He actually had impressive range - he usually hit higher notes with kind of a screechy whine, but if he really chose to engage a song seriously he could do it with the best of them - as he does here.
Of course he was not a trained singer, but on this song you can hear him do things that serious singers do: breath control, phrasing, modulation ... he was capable of those thing when he chose and makes this maybe my favorite Elvis performance.
And, ironically, probably my favorite version of this song shows up in the lower-left corner of the youtube screen when Elvis finishes: the wonderful Australian, Judith Durham, live from 1969 with the Seekers. Wonderful!
Thanks for posting this.
GlasgowJohn Sr's (RIP) favourite song...I have never heard this version - have just sent it to my sisters in the UK
Sublime actually and another of my all time favourites is American Trilogy.
I never could stand Elvis...singing or acting. No idea why.
I’ll admit the same thing. Greaseball.
