According to Mercopress, Goose green is now clear of the mines laid by Argentine forces in 1982 and the entire archipelago should be completely free of mines by the end of the decade.
The cost has been enormous - £16m so far- and one has to wonder whether the Argentine state should have been forced to clear these minefields themselves.

Whoever lays land mines should have to remove them, period. I'm astounded that Argentina would set these horrendous devices in islands they consider their own. Unconscionable.

BTW, I just learned (via “Jack WhiteHall - Travels with my Father”) that in Cambodia trained rats on tiny leashes are uncovering land mines without being blown up, because their weight is insufficient to trigger the devices. Clever!
What a horrible campaign to discredit these men who actually did the work of the Argentine government for them. And how could the govt possibly claim that they knew the identities of the dead, who unbelievably were not even provided dog tags by the military?
