National identity

One can't help harking back to the Brexit referendum when reading this, when more than half the UK population voted to leave The United States Of Europe, more out of a backdated sense of empire and jingoism than practical reality.

In the end, and in my humble opinion, this breakaway has served no purpose whatsoever, in fact quite the opposite.

On the other hand, I travelled frequently to France, Spain, Germany, Holland and Belgium long before Brexit was even a sperm and the national identities of those countries were very much alive and kicking, thank goodness.

I even lived in the hinterlands of Spain for two years and felt that the only encroachment from the US of E was purely bureaucratic.

On balance, I would have preferred to have chosen France because in comparison, Spain felt like a third world country.

I may have missed the point however.

Replace a few lines, close your eyes and remember you're in Argentina/
