Gary Lineker, a top goal scorer in the 1986 World Cup and the highest paid sports presenter at the BBC (Match Of The Day) has been 'suspended' pending an investigation into his Tweets comparing the government's new immigration (refugees) boat policies to Hitler's treatment of the Jews.

Practically all his colleagues have walked out in protest and brought the channel's sport coverage to an embarrassing halt.

The BBC is a publicly funded corporation paid for by the TV license fee and is therefore beholden to the government of the day.

It is however the very definition of woke and its reporting is so wrapped up in protective blankets that it sometimes makes me weep.

Gary Lineker is freelance and under contract to the BBC and it's debatable whether the same rules of impartiality apply to him, so this fracas has caused a firestorm.

I'm sure him and his mates won't have a problem finding employment elsewhere.

I don’t want the bbc to end up like Fox News, where they are free to say anything about anyone, carte blanche. This is why I would prefer journalists not to be partial

    Quote from Bombonera

I think Match of The Day starts shortly and is supposedly only going to be 20 minutes long with no punditry or analysis. Not sure about match commentary.

I get a strong sense that the BBC no longer retains much respect by the public generally. The license fee system is a hot topic all of its own and more and more people refuse to pay it.

It looks like the BBC have tied themselves up in knots over this and are desperate to resolve it. But with such a stark clash of views and principles and the government leaning on them then one wonders how.

there was no commentary, to be honest I do like it that way.

Its not just the BBC in general, but journalists should be impartial, whether they have the right to free speech, or in some cases, not. I know its impossible to be impartial in a dictatorship, because most are doing a job.

Unfortunately, in a dictatorship, they have to go along what the dictator says

By coincidence, tonight I found myself listening to my two new favorite podcasters (thanks, bebopalula ), Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart. Their first topic on yesterday’s podcast was Lineker and the BBC .

Lineker at the end of the day is a decent bloke. In spite of being a millionaire, he is loyal to his beliefs.

The BBC is not an independent source of news.

It has been pro-Tory for several years and will not publish any negative stories about them.

Very anti Scottish as well , but that is another story and would take a week to tell it.

He's been reinstated following a U-turn by the BBC.

I suspect they'll have to rewrite certain peoples contracts when they get renewed.

    From the BBC yesterday:

Gary Lineker: Presenter to stop hosting Match of the Day, BBC confirms
The BBC has "agreed in principle a contract extension through to the 2026 World Cup," with Lineker.
