After her press conference the other day I didn't think she could get any worse. She did.

I'll lead Tories into next election, says embattled Liz Truss
The PM apologises for mistakes, after her chancellor tears up almost all of her tax-cutting agenda.

Safe to say she won't be leading anyone. It is the UK after all.....where 'what goes around comes around'.

Does anyone know the real reason why she dodged PMs Questions yesterday.?

    All very strange .

Apparently if she hangs on for two weeks she gets a mega pension....

Is that verifiable fact? If so, it’s absurd. And horrendous.

PMQs will be tomorrow (Wednesday) as usual. That was an UQ from the opposition and of course the PM ought to have fielded it for herself.

What was telling in Penny Mordaunt's reply is that she repeated the accusations word for word ("She's not hiding under her desk" etc) It's long been understood that in replying to an accusation from the other side of the chamber one never uses the words of the accuser because it provides a nice, juicy soundbite to be used against you. Penny Mordaunt is far too experienced a politician to have done that by accident.

    The $h!TSh0w continues...

Nobody really knows exactly what's happened today. A resignation, two sackings, two re-instatements, a couple of beatings and some U-turns seems to be the best guess. It will all become a lot clearer once the dust has settled. Meanwhile Tom Peck in the Indie has taken a stab at explaining it.

There is no way back for Liz Truss. This is as farcical as it ever gets
After the chaos of recent days, the prime minister might have hoped the storm would blow over. Instead, she has walked into a hurricane of her own making

Frankly I am looking forward to my imminent arrival back in Argentina: a country with a comparatively well-ordered and effective government. Compared to this lot in Westminster, anyway.

I like your take on the Argentine 'well ordered and effective government'. Nice one. Which is of course par for the course south of the border, as they've had decades of practice. What's happening uup-north is now turning into farce with my only regret being that Argentina can't remove its leaders as swiftly as the UK seemingly can.

This government is not functioning. It is utterly dysfunctional and we're seeing that play out hour by hour.

We've seen that this evening with confusion over whether the chief whip - the person responsible for discipline (and there isn't any discipline in the Conservative Party at the moment) - was even in her job!

A Conservative MP texted me earlier saying that he learned there had been a change of mind from the government as to whether the fracking vote was a confidence vote or not, just 10 minutes before it happened.

That left the chief whip completely isolated and sparked all this confusion over whether she was leaving the government.

But that's a micro example, a case study in this broader chaos.

The reason that matters is not because of the soap opera in this postcode, it's about whether the government can function at a time where the country needs it to function because of all the problems that we report on every night.

Right now, the simple truth is the government is not functioning.

It looks increasingly difficult for Liz Truss to survive any length of time - that's the judgement of senior conservatives who simply cannot bring themselves to defend what is going on any longer.

The big question being widely asked here tonight, is whether Truss can survive even for a few more days, let alone longer than that. This is a very difficult spot for her to escape from.

    This is beyond mind-bending.

The UK’s ability to dump leaders at the drop of a hat can be either satisfying or unsettling. Or both.

In a sense, yes. But I don't see this as backstabbing but a rejection of someone who holds no authority whatsoever, both politically and personality-wise.

Most modern day politicians, including Boris, could have handled that press conference like a walk in the park. She was like a rabbit caught in the headlights of an oncoming car.

And that BBC interview would have been Childs play for most of us, even though he quite rightly asked some hard questions. She was absolutely clueless and those pauses were not for effect - she was on the ropes.

Shocker? Or not? Liz Truss just stepped down.

And she’s had her own Argentina Expats thread for only 3 days.
