I still think the people would have preferred to see the younger King William on the throne.

True, but rules are rules and it's Charles' turn. Plus, I don't think William and Kate are eager to step up and increase their royal duties with three little children!

The Queen managed to do it and she was much younger than Wills. He's 40 so not exactly a spring chicken.

Hey, I am just one year younger!

Ohhhhh the big 40 for you next then!! It'll be all downhill from then on!!
Yes, I watched it. Very moving indeed.
Once the pallbearers left and the guards assumed their watchful positions at the corners of the catafalque, I couldn’t help wondering how long they would be able to hold that position.
Coverage in the US eventually cut away to the cars taking the Royal family back to Buckingham Palace, so I never saw how long it was until the guards turned their watch over to the next shift.

I believe they rotate every two hours, but I may be wrong.

Incredible physical discipline and devotion.
Fascinating facts about Westminster Hall:
The Queen is now lying in state in Westminster Hall.
Built in 1097, Westminster Hall has played a significant role in British history for centuries.
King Charles III addressed members of Parliament and peers there on Monday, but it has also hosted the trials of Charles I and Guy Fawkes, Henry VIII's coronation banquet, and speeches by well-known figures such as Nelson Mandela, French President Charles de Gaulle, Pope Benedict, and US President Barack Obama.
The last member of the Royal Family to lie in state at Westminster was the Queen Mother in 2002, when more than 200,000 people queued to file past her coffin and pay their respects.
But it is not only royals who have lain in state in Westminster Hall.
The same honour was extended to former Prime Minister Winston Churchill following his death in 1965 and to the victims of the R101 airship disaster of 1930.
Here’s another fact: like all churches built before Henry VII’s reign, Westminster Abbey was built by the Roman Catholic Church, and taken over by Henry’s Church of England. (Thinking about that reminds me of the comment attributed to the late Zsa Zsa Gabor: “I never hated any of my ex-husbands enough to give back their diamonds.”)
I was once in Westminster Abbey with a Catholic historian, admiring its beauty and history , when he announced in a stage whisper, “They stole this from us, you know!”
The Royal website.
What a rich collection of topics!
I have a question that isn’t covered on the Royal website: when did the Queen start wearing the Mad Hatter-style of hat almost exclusively?
(And has anyone noticed that in the past week, The Queen Consort has adopted the fashion?)
I'd feel the same if my pen leaked and I'm not surprised he forgot the date either.
Yeah me as well, its a messy thing to clean up. He's loss a mother in a short space of time after losing his father. Even I would given the circumstances
For the funeral on Monday, Queen Elizabeth's coffin will be placed on the Royal Navy gun carriage and pulled by 98 sailors with 40 others acting as a brake behind it. This tradition dates back to Queen Victoria's funeral in 1901 when the horses pulling the carriage were spooked and the Royal Navy sailors stepped in to pull the carriage.
Lord Mountbatten and Winston Churchill were the last to receive this honour.
Very interesting.
Why 98 and 40?
