Thank you for the historical remembrance, Richard Pedersen . Because it occurs close to the change of seasons, Labor Day not only commemorates American workers, but also signals the official end of summer.
All over the country, people have a day off from work (on some federal holidays, e.g. George Washington’s Birthday, only government and banking offices are closed), but I nlike in Argentina, in the US, restaurants and other service industries remain open.
In beach communities like ours, the locals cheer Labor Day, when out-of-town people stop arriving and the beach resumes the tranquility of nature.
Our local ice cream shops have long lines of patrons in a last hurrah, and families shoot off their last fireworks on the beach.
Sand pails, float toys, beach tents and umbrellas are all returned to garages and basements until Memorial Day (last Monday in May), which honors people who have died while serving in the US military, and also marks the beginning of summer.
