You all may have noticed that ads no longer appear, so the forum should now be a little more enjoyable.
Much better, thanks.
I miss the ads, who do I complain to?

So as the year draws to an end what is the future of the forum? Will it survive another year or not?

It will only survive if members want it to.
Don’t forget that there’s also a financial component, until now paid principally by Splinter and me. Are you willing to equally divide the cost by the number of principle users?
Why are you paying for it?

So Splinter won’t be left with the whole tab. We all enjoy the forum, so why should he not only do all the work but also pony up the lion’s share of expenses?

There are plenty of alternatives that cost nothing. Especially if it's just to keep in touch and chat.

Last time I made a donation (okay, it was also the first time) I divided the published hosting cost by the number of regular users and paid that portion. That is probably woefully inadequate now since the hosting cost has gone up and the regular usership appears to have gone down.
..but to answer a comment elsewhere in this thread from UK Man, yes there are other places and yes some of them are notionally free but firstly, this place is unique so isn't it worth keeping and contributing? And secondly, in the so-called free places you are not the customer, you are the product which is being sold to their customers and I think it's worth a bob or two not to get sucked in there.
Why are you paying for it?
I've already explained why we are paying for it, but I'll run it past you again.
All websites need to be hosted and all domains, like this one, need to be maintained with an annual fee, so there are two costs right there.
The actual day to day maintenance of the forum I do myself because I enjoy it and have been doing so for nearly ten years.

If you're referring to social media, then yes, that is free, but it's a completely different situation and open to the public, ie everyone. This is a premium site and therefore costs money to run.
Your pipe smokers' forum will be hosted somewhere with all the associated costs, so I think you are missing the point. The very existence of this forum is highly specialised and let's face it, it was originally designed for those of us who were banned from BAExpats, of which you are one, if I'm not mistaken.
All contributions are voluntary, so it's up to each member to decide whether to help out, so I hardly consider $10 a couple of times a year to be a hardship.

I'm only here for the chat to be honest, same reason I was on BAExpats and still can if I wanted to. Do we need a ''premium site'' just for chatting? I don't think we do.

Well, chat away then then, in spite of the fact that you have again completely missed the point which frankly, I can't be arsed to repeat.

I like your logical thinking! Of course it would work if all regular users paid that portion -
Continuing with that logic, I believe the annual total is $380. How many “regular” users do you count, bebopalula ?

Okay okay....I didn't realise it was a website.
