Really enjoyed seeing these beautiful paintings, Carlos . Of these artists, the only one I am familiar with is Quinquela Martín, whose painting is magnificent. Now I want to see more of these other painters’ works.

I tried very hard to see what this art critic sees in Van Gogh's masterpiece, Café Terrace at Night, but I failed miserably. I just love to drink in the scene and imagine I'm there, which isn't difficult.

Although the review is very instructive and artistically helpful, I think perhaps the real beauty of the painting lies in just what you described, Splinter : simply drinking in the scene and imagining oneself there.

In my very personal opinion, it is very hard to appreciate art now that technology tells it all. Also, I think our modern life favors an analytical mind, with no room left for feeling or personal interpretations.
I was very much fond of Van Gogh when I was a teenager. I thought he was very rebellious and depicted well what he saw (somehow in an inebriated or not sound state of mind) and the atmosphere at the time (a tiny road in France late in the evening, the people chatting and drinking sitting at the outside tables, the starry night above them, the contour a little blurry because the painter is tipsy...)

Being honest I find most of the 'experts' who inhabit the art world are right pain in the arses.
