People who use ‘whom’ as a subject seem not to understands the parts of speech or the grammar school art of diagramming sentences, and they often just plug in ‘whom’ in the hope that they will sound educated.

The effect is the opposite.

Simple rule: when in doubt, use ‘who.’ In 21st century usage, it is never wrong. And ‘whom’ is almost always wrong.
