Jamaica tells Prince William and Kate: we want to sever ties with the Royal family

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been told during their Caribbean tour that Jamaica will fulfil its ambition to become a republic, with its prime minister saying that “unresolved issues” remain.

The Royal couple held an official meeting with Andrew Holness, who made clear his country's intention to sever ties with the British monarchy.

  • Mr. Holness’s announcement was that they were going to cut ties with the monarchy and become a republic, which would complete their independence. it would have been more diplomatic if he had declined to participate in the Royal Tour of the Caribbean, rather than using it as an occasion for saying “We’re firing you.”

They could have waited until the Cambridge party had left. Don't forget that Barbados did this recently.

  • One of those visits costs the host country plenty.

I think William and Kate are an admirable, dutiful couple who well represent The Firm. But seeing footage of their visit to the islands - (condescendingly?) playing the native drums, self-consciously dancing, etc - it all just seemed like an awkward attempt to return to a time long past.

  • The Duke of Cambridge has acknowledged he may not succeed the Queen and the Prince of Wales as head of the Commonwealth.

Reflecting on his eight-day Caribbean tour, the Duke spoke candidly about how it had "brought into even sharper focus" questions about the past and the future.
