Dont forget that Jamaica has been independent since 1962.
They kept the QE2 as nominal head of state.
So the next stage to Republicanism is not any big shock....

Mr. Holness’s announcement was that they were going to cut ties with the monarchy and become a republic, which would complete their independence. it would have been more diplomatic if he had declined to participate in the Royal Tour of the Caribbean, rather than using it as an occasion for saying “We’re firing you.”

They could have waited until the Cambridge party had left. Don't forget that Barbados did this recently.

Maybe the royal entourage should have asked if it was OK to visit?
Apparently, they imposed themselves without any debate and hence the rebellious attitude of the Jamaicans.

One of those visits costs the host country plenty.
I think William and Kate are an admirable, dutiful couple who well represent The Firm. But seeing footage of their visit to the islands - (condescendingly?) playing the native drums, self-consciously dancing, etc - it all just seemed like an awkward attempt to return to a time long past.

This picture probably sums up the tour.

That one really makes me cringe.

The Duke of Cambridge has acknowledged he may not succeed the Queen and the Prince of Wales as head of the Commonwealth.
Reflecting on his eight-day Caribbean tour, the Duke spoke candidly about how it had "brought into even sharper focus" questions about the past and the future. The Telegraph, 26 March 2022
