In Scotland it's not nearly as offensive as south of the border and certainly not as offensive as it is in the USA. In fact, I most often use it against men, many of whom, let's face it, really deserve to be hammered with it.
When to use it, that's the point.

I don't tend to use it very often, perhaps because I was brought up in a house with three sisters...

I can honestly say I've rarely ever used the word, even when 'out with the lads' in Scotland. I much prefer using fanny instead.

In Malaga in Spáin, there is a local oyster called Concha Fina. My friends from the south of Spain cannot understand their Latin American visitors laughing or going red when the waiter says, " The concha finas are very fresh today!"

Mrs GJ , often shows her bilingual skills by cursing "the fucking concha...."
