  • Some forum members have privately asked me what in the world is happening to democracy in the US. While the larger discussion would be how and why things have devolved to the current state, this is a more manageable account of what the state of affairs is now, and a fascinating if depressing read, from a historian who looks at current events through the lens of history:

  • Compared your democracy with ours in Argentina you are in the best of the paradises.

One of the worst hints is the Resume or CV of some of the ministers.

That one who is minister of Foreign affairs has no any antecedents in exterior relationships. Also incapable of speaking in no other language than Spanish.

Other one, was in the guerrilla warfare of the 1970's and boosted to put a bomb in a restaurant trying to kill a military officer who had the custom to go there everyday.

He failed to kill the military officer, but instead he killed the waiter and an innocent lady who seat in the same table.

Furthermore, he received an amount of 250.000 U$S because he had to migrate to other country.

    Here murderers are awarded.

The present government is so bad that is beyond description,

  • Apologies for the broken link. Here is the repaired one.

I agree with you, Carlos . Argentina’s government has been far more corrupt than that of the US, until 4.5 years ago. Now it may be impossible to repair the damage. When you are able to read the attached article, because of your knowledge of US history and institutions, you will agree.

Could you please remind me of the names of these ministers, Carlos? It can get confusing.

  • Could you please remind me of the names of these ministers, Carlos? It can get confusing.

The Former minister of Foreign affairs, Mr. Sola, was unable to speak any other language than Spanish, Never had experience in diplomacy.

The other murder who was minister was Taiana, son of Peron's doctor. He was the murderer of 2 persons, nothing to do with the real target, a military officer.

It is very painful for me to highlight these stories. Remember that I have shame for my country.

Here is the biography of JOrgeTaiana

Jorge Enrique Taiana (born 31 May 1950) is an Argentine Justicialist Party politician, currently serving as the country's Minister of Defense, since 10 August 2021. Taiana previously served as Foreign Minister in the administrations of President Néstor Kirchner and his successor, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, from 2005 to 2010, and as a National Senator for Buenos Aires from 2019 to 2021.[1][2]

His father was Jorge Alberto Taiana, colleague and physician of former President Juan Perón.

    Early life

Jorge Taiana was born in Buenos Aires as the fourth and second youngest child of Matilde Puebla and Jorge Alberto Taiana.[3] His father was a prominent Argentine surgeon who later served in a number of social policy posts for President Juan Perón, as well as one of his personal physicians. He attended the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, studied sociology, and was awarded a Master's Degree in Social Sciences at the Latin American Social Science Institute (FLACSO). He was later a researcher at the National University of Quilmes and worked in the field of human rights. Taiana is married to Telefe producer Bernarda Llorente; he has three children, two by a previous marriage.[4]

Taiana was a militant Peronist in the early 1970s and in 1973 re-launched Descamisado, a populist news weekly thereafter associated with the Montoneros guerilla movement.[5] He worked alongside his father in the Ministry of Education as Head of Cabinet following the return of Peronism to power in 1973, and despite being threatened by the Triple A, he decided to remain in the country. He was accused to be responsible for a bomb attack on July 4th 1975 which killed two people in a bar in downtown Buenos Aires. He had been arrested on June 29th and spent seven years in jail, mostly in a military prison in Rawson.

    Political career

Following his release, Taiana held several academic positions until he was appointed Advisor to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Argentine Chamber of Deputies (1987–89). He was appointed Undersecretary for Organizations and Special Matters after the election of fellow Peronist Carlos Menem in 1989, and in 1990 was appointed Undersecretary for Foreign Policy and later Director of International Organizations (1991). Between 1992 and 1995, he was the Argentine Ambassador to Guatemala and concurrently to Belize. After wide regional support to his candidature, he served as Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the OAS between 1996 and 2001, and then became Secretary for Human Rights of the Government of the Province of Buenos Aires.[6]

President Kirchner appointed Taiana as Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship in December 2005, replacing Rafael Bielsa; Taiana had been Bielsa's Deputy since 2003.[6] As Foreign Minister, Taiana has presided over the United Nations Security Council and to dealt with issues such as the Falkland Islands sovereignty dispute, the paper mill dispute with Uruguay and the accession of Venezuela to Mercosur, among many other matters of Argentine foreign policy. He was confirmed as Foreign Minister by Cristina Fernández de Kirchner on her inaugural on 10 December 2007.[7]

He resigned his post on 18 June 2010, citing "lack of support and differences" with the President.[8] He remained generally supportive of her administration, however, and in September was nominated to head the Front for Victory party list for the Buenos Aires City Legislature.[9]

    National Senator

In the 2017 legislative election, Fernández de Kirchner announced her candidacy to the Argentine Senate in Buenos Aires Province as part of Unidad Ciudadana, and Taiana was announced as the second candidate in the list.[10] The Fernández de Kirchner–Taiana ticket came second in the general election, with 37.31% of the vote. In the electoral system for the upper house, this meant that only Fernández de Kirchner was elected as the senator for the minority.[11] Following the 2019 general election, however, in which Fernández de Kirchner was elected vice president alongside Alberto Fernández, her seat in the Senate was left vacant, and Taiana was sworn into office in her stead on 27 November 2019.[12]

    Defense Minister

On 9 August 2021, Cabinet Chief Santiago Cafiero confirmed Taiana would be the next Minister of Defense of Argentina, in replacement of Agustín Rossi, who resigned to focus on his campaign to the Senate in the 2021 legislative election. Taiana was one of two ministerial replacements ahead of the 2021 election, alongside Juan Zabaleta, who replaced Daniel Arroyo as Minister of Social Development.[13] His vacancy in the Senate was filled by Juliana Di Tullio.[14]

  • There should be no place for a murderer in government. But as for Mr. Sola, I’m afraid he was not unique in having a high position in Diplomacy without being able to speak other languages. Look at all the ambassadors the world has sent to Argentina, who have not spoken Spanish! Outrageous. And as for experience in Diplomacy, what about the British Ambassador who was a former flight attendant?

Anyway, we cannot afford such random nominations. We have an excellent school of diplomacy, very demanding for the students. But the government alway choose people from their party, not related with the carriere (as the French called it) These people arrived only to be consul or diplomatic attaches, never chancellors.

The last illustrious minister was Jorge Faurie, a real scholar in diplomacy. He organized the G20 meeting in 2017 and it was a success. He was nominated by Macri.

    When was that Rice ?

  • GlasgowJohn , I agree - definitely not Shan Morgan! A decade later, although I do remember the usually impeccable source in Argentina who reported that, I don’t remember if any name was ever attached to what certainly seems to be what Cristina would call Bad Information.

  • No mention of being a flight attendant here....

There is a gross mistake. There was no British Ambassador in Argentina who was a flight attendant. It is the reverse, we (Argentina) have sent a ex flight attendant whose name was Alicia Castro to be Ambassador of Argentina to the UK. This lady was also a leader in the trade union of the Flight Attendants of Aerolíneas Argentinas. (Always claiming for more privileges, as usual). The decision was taken by the Kirchner administration.

Perhaps her only antecedent in diplomacy was that she was fluent in English. Only that "brilliant" feature., what else?

Another reason to be ashamed for my country.

  • CARLOS!!! Do not be ashamed for your country! Continue to call out injustices and mismanagement that you see, in order to help Argentina live up to its enormous potential!

The rest of us on this forum are all too happy to talk about crazy things our current and past leaders have done and will do. This is Free Speech!

They really scraped the bottom of the barrel when she was chosen as ambassador to the UK, one of the most sensitive foreign office jobs.

Carlos is not alone in this sentiment, especially under a Peronist regime, such as this one.
