Having stopped charging commission about 4 years ago on used goods, they probably realised how much money they were losing and will now be charging 12%.

any idea what the competitors will do ?
I read the announcement and it doesn't say that free advertising will be removed. Currently there are three kind of ads: Free, Classic, and Premium. The classic and premium fees will increase slightly (about +1%), that's what the announcement says. I believe the free ads will keep existing. <br>

The competition, such as it is are OLX and AlaMaula and their categorisation is bloody awful. ML on the other hand have a system of categorisation which is spot on, even down to the smallest of locales.
I love to hate them and use all sorts of trick to get around their rules, but I do sell a fair bit. Two good sales this week only.
The trick is to put your phone number in a photo of the product which their bots can't pick up as it's simply a jpg and not text. Another is put your phone number as the dimensions of the product you're selling (in replies to questions etc), inserting W, H, D or whatever as appropriate to disguise the number. If the buyer is canny enough he'll pick it up, if not, remind them to check the photos again.
I've been in touch with Mercadolibre about this as they charged me 12% on a sale which I closed in January. It turns out that I may have chosen to advertise in their Clasica category which attracts commission.
Anyway, if all products are advertised for free, there is no commission apparently.
This is the email I received from them earlier:

Great to know the Free category is still in place. But does it affect products, only? I tried to post an ad for my services (Italian classes) and I got the message that I already used one free ad in the last 365 days, so I had the option to switch to paid advertising -- the cheapest was priced at 400+ ARS!
