It is reassuring to know that the Guggenheim has maintained a sense of humor, offering a golden shithole to the emperor.
These kinds of jokes are not new. Recall the urinal signed by Marcel Duchamp in the 1930's.
Artists of nowadays do not pursue anymore the beautiful, they like to explore the final boundaries of art and some times they produced works that generates discussion, but not the joy of appreciating beauty.
Well, Cattelan has a brilliant precedent, his sculpture L.O.V.E. installed in front of the Milan Stock Exchange. Or more famous known as 'the finger'.
Guess why:
The first time I walked into the square and saw it, I thought it was a students' prank. Well, it's pretty fitting, right? You can either see as 'f**k the system' or 'the system f***s you'. I am surprised they let him install it, at all!
This image confirms my former post. What kind of beauty adds to the marvelous city of Milan?
Even the Pirelli tower, clase to the Milano Centrale, plays a good dialogue between the modern and the academic way. And also the Velasca tower, bulit in 1953, is an intention to accept the
environmental pre-existences mixed with the modern style.
But this? The only achievement is to enlarge the scale, a resource almost boring among the post modern designers. They copy a form and enlarge their scale. And the stupid people say "What a marvelous goal of this genius!"
And this super simple resource is applauded by the well paid critics!
