Gustav Holst Jupiter theme

  • Thank you! I haven't thought about this magnificent composition in years, and loved hearing it. There is something about it that is at once both humble and magnificent, uncomplicated yet stately.

  • Gustav von Holst was from German Stock, living in England, and he erased the "von" after WW1, to appear a real English. He was an excellent musician, but perhaps a better orchestrator, as was the Italian Ottorino Respighi, author of "The fountains of Rome" and "The pines of Rome", that are very popular.

    Orchestration is a skill like some uncanning craftmanship. You have to administrate all the resources of the orchestra: strings, bronze, metals, flutes and drums.
