This very well written article on the 1953 bombing of the Plaza de Mayo is a real eye opener and illustrates quite clearly how Argentines can turn on each other so fiercely.

The Bombing Of The Plaza De Mayo

This very well written piece on the history of the British in Argentina is definitely worth a read.

My grandmother used to tell me wonderful stories about a great uncle of mine who was an engineer and came here to build the railways. I suspect she planted the seed that led me to being here now.

    F***!!! ^^

LOL. Mixed blessing. So, UK Man , how did you first get the idea of coming to Argentina? And how did you spend your first years here?

I sense a good story for the weekend….

Not really despite the 'build up'. ^^

Truth be told despite the stories of my great uncle in Argentina told to me by my lovely grandmother...she lived to the ripe old age of 96 you know and had a great influence on my life. I have to 'blame' Tom Vernon aka 'Fat Man on a Bicycle' for ending up here. As a lover of travelling in the UK as well as in foreign lands by bicycle I watched Tom Vernon's TV series 'Fat Man in Argentina' and firmly decided I wanted to go on a cycle tour in Argentina.

This was back in the very early days of the internet. So having decided Argentina was going to be my next cycle touring destination I had to do some research. Yahoo groups was all the rage back then and I noticed they had a Argentina travel advice group so I posted informing the locals of my intentions and I was looking for advice. My future wife was the only peron who replied to my question and the rest is history.

I have Tom Vernon's book and have read is avidly several times. It's a great read, but I've yet to get my hands on the TV series.

I think I downloaded it from a Torrent site and put on discs years ago. If I did and find it (God only knows where it is) I'll let you know.

Just ordered the book. Does the video hit highlights? Or does it cover the whole thing?

( And how can he stay fat with all that cycling? )

Not great quality I see. No idea who the Tom Vernon who uploaded it is as he passed away in 2013. :scratchead:

Indeed. I too thought he had died.

Here's a very interesting obituary of Tom Vernon.

The obituary indeed shows his impressive range of talents and his willingness to “go where other men fear to go,” e.g., “Most notably, he had a vasectomy live on air.“

This documentary about Juan Peron is fascinating. His birth certificate was falsified as was his place of birth (Lobos), he was illegitimate and of Indian origin. In those days, the 40s and 50s, it would have been scandalous for the facts to emerge and his enemies tried their best to smear him, but he managed to keep it all secret. Sound familiar?

He was in fact a fraud.

For me the thing that pointed to the non-acceptance of Peron by Argentina's elite was his burial in Chacarita rather than with Evita in the Duarte family vault in Recoleta. It's quite strange, in my opinion, for such a high-placed husband and wife couple to be separated in death like that and I presume that the Duartes didn't want to have anything to do with Peron and likewise wouldn't countenance their family member residing with Peron in the -ahem- lower-class environs of Chacarita.

If you will forgive a whiff of elitism wafting from this post: whilst I have no plans to kick the bucket anytime soon, I'd always previously thought that if I died in BsAs I'd like to end up in the Cementario Britanico in Chacarita[1]. But having been offered a space in the wife's family vault in Recoleta, for me the choice is a no-brainer!

The wife's family have a ''vault'' with several empty spaces in the towns main cemetery. I told the misses if I kick the bucket first there's no way I want to end up in there. Cremate me and toss the ashes in the first bin you pass by I've told her.
