65% increase on digital services - My Adobe experience

    I am a heavy Adobe Pro user and I subscribed to a paid plan in 2020. The monthly subscription rate for Argentina is significantly lower than for the rest of the world, however, they only accept Argentinian credit cards as a method of payment. Since we have none, I used my foreign credit card with the official rate. Still cheaper than subscribing as a first world user.

    Today I received this email from Adobe (sound like an April fool's joke in the first world, but very credible in Argentina):

    Con los recientes cambios en las leyes fiscales de Argentina, a partir del 1 de abril de 2021, Adobe se ve obligada a aplicar un impuesto del 65% junto con tus próximos pagos. El 30% corresponde al impuesto "PAIS" y el 35% al impuesto de la Resolución 4815/2020. El precio base de tu plan de Adobe no sufrirá ningún cambio.

    My current monthly charge is 581 ARS. The new amount will be 958,65 ARS, which means 10,43 USD per month.

    First world users pay 180 USD /year or about 14 USD/month if billed monthly.

    There's something very wrong there because these taxes are only applicable to Argentina issued cards, for the reasons I previously stated. Unless it's because you chose to pay in AR$?

    What was also interesting last week, was USA FTC claiming the cancellation fee of the annual "contract" is not allowed. FTC has no prosecute power so nothing will change. In Argentina it is one of the few countries that Adobe cannot, though if things change to be less regulated I imagine they might implement the cancellation fee.

    Many companies are locking in users with annual contracts and implementing weird rules.

    My Parallels subscription, for example, renewed on last January for another year for $99/year.

    This week, Parallels is running a 25% off promotion which would cost me $80, but I can't take advantage of it because - they say - you cannot buy a renewal in advance.

    I am currently on the same boat with ABBYY Fine Reader, waiting for November for their BlackFriday deal to buy it again instead of renewing it when it expired in May 2024.

    If I am patient enough to wait for the BlackFriday, I can keep renewing it year after year using the BlackFriday deal instead of paying full price every year, like I did in the past.

    It seems a dumb marketing strategy to me,as I could go with a competitor in the meanwhile.

    Free open source VirtualBox from Oracle has worked fine for me the past 15+ years on all my Mac and MBP machines to run Windows. It is the same as Parallels or probably has more features. Though I’m not up to date on what Parallels offers for running Windows on Mac.

    I did hear of it, and I'm glad I've not signed up to their subscription. I still use CS6 and LR6 (perpetual software), and boy am I glad I dodged the bullet on their subs and ToS, as you can see by the screenshot, there is no "Disagree" and "Cancel subscription" options at the bottom, just "Accept and continue". There is a FTC lawsuit against Adobe for their hidden cancellation links and fees (when you eventually get the link). I just hope that the courts sees this as being against the law, but unfortunately, I don't know
