Barby Franco, model, has a GPS implant somewhere in her body but she doesn't know exactly where. It was apparently inserted by an Israeli company in the US at a cost of $4000 when she was married. The reason given was in case she was kidnapped, but now she wants it removed. It's not even clear if her ex can follow her movements using an app, or how it gets charged up.

If it works like a pet microchip, you need to pass a reader near the body part and it could be encapsulated in the skin over years, affecting readability. This is what the vet that chipped Serafina told us. In fact, he noted the exact location where he implanted the chip (which is the size of a rice grain) for future reference.
Also our Italian cat was chipped (she had to come to Argentina with us, but died prior to our trip) and when we went to do the paperwork with the local health authority, the vet actually had to slip the reader into the pet carrier next to the point where she was implanted. He couldn't read her chip from outside the textile carrier, it had to be less than one inch to her skin.
I share your doubts about how it can be powered being so little.

I believe pet chips are RFID which is different from the GPS chip as RFID doesn't need a power source.

Yes, pet chips are RFID, just like transport cards. However, it is not clear how the GPS can communicate with the satellite if it is not powered. Unless she has to power it some way (by wearing something charged at night next to it? For example wearing a special 'watch' and the chip is on her wrist) and it is possible to store this power in the GPS in some way. It should be also discussed for how long would this last. In case of kidnapping, if you can be reached by GPS only for the first 24 hours, it could be useless to have a GPS implanted at all.
