I have a large collection of DVDs which, bit by bit I'm ripping to mp4 so that we can watch them on the smart TV with a pendrive.

Tonight I'm watching Waterloo (1970) (with Christopher Plummer and Rod Steiger) which has some of the best battle scenes I've ever seen.

    Quote

Bondarchuk made the film with 15,000 infantrymen and 2,000 cavalry on loan from the Soviet army. Trained up to fight in 19th century style, and given time to grow proper moustaches, these men do an outstanding job as French, British and Prussian soldiers. It was said at the time that this put Bondarchuk in command of the seventh largest army in the world. As a result, the scenes of battle at Waterloo are visually and technically sublime, and must be seen to be believed. Moreover, the mostly hokey screenplay has its finest hour when the immutably deadpan Lord Uxbridge falls foul of a grapeshot. Uxbridge: "By God, Sir, I've lost my leg." Wellington: "By God, Sir, so you have." It is a joy to confirm that those lines are accurate. The leg was buried in a nearby garden, and became a tourist attraction.

I've also ripped Brief Encounter (1945) and added Spanish sub-titles for anyone in Adri's family who may want to watch it. Battle of Britain will be next.

Ha! That’s fine for people outside the US, but for those of us trapped inside, we can scare ourselves enough just by turning on the news.

Political response to Borat 2 -

How is Kazakhstan taking the latest “Borat” movie?

When the comedian Sacha Baron Cohen made fun of the entire country in his first movie in 2006, the authoritarian Kazakh government banned it and threatened to sue him.

With the sequel “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” out now on Amazon, the government changed tack and decided that any publicity is good. It embraced the Borat character’s catchphrase and turned it into a tourism slogan: “Kazakhstan. Very nice!”

“In Covid times, when tourism spending is on hold, it was good to see the country mentioned in the media,” said a Kazakh tourism board official. “Not in the nicest way, but it’s good to be out there.”

The Great, shown every Sundays for the next 10 weeks, since one was already shown, is actually....great.

Such a stunning actress that Elle Fanning. Nicolas Hoult's role is also funny as the less charismatic Peter the Great, well in today's "standards"

After reading this in The Telegraph, I want to see Michael Apted’s documentary series “Up.” Does anyone know if it is available anywhere?

Last night I watched United 93, the only hijacked plane on September 11th 2001 that didn't hit its intended target.

We all know the tragic outcome and frankly, watching this film was harrowing to say the least. In spite of feeling like a mawkish voyeur, I feel that director Paul Greengrass captured the raw and terrifying emotions of this flight, not to mention the flight control centres and the other terrorist attacks in a non-bombastic and completely real way.

When the film ended I felt numb.

Anne Boleyn was black, according to UK's Channel 5.

...and in their next production, with a working title of Martin Luther King - The Truth, the lead will be played by Matt Damon.

I watched 15 minutes of Bridgerton and then hit the cancel button.
