Indian Summers
(2015)Overview
Epic drama set in the summer of 1932 where India dreams of independence, but the British are clinging to power. Set against the sweeping grandeur of the Himalayas and tea plantations of Northern India, the drama tells the rich and explosive story of the decline of the British Empire and the birth of modern India, from both sides of the experience. At the heart of the story lie the implications and ramifications of the tangled web of passions, rivalries and clashes that define the lives of those brought… Read moreGenres

Binged seasons one and two on DVD’s, only to learn that season three had been canceled. Pity. Plot line needed to be tightened up, but the sheer lush greenery of the countryside (filmed in Malaysia) and the mysterious relationships among India’s religions and castes - and among all of them and the British - were very engrossing.

Last night I started watching David Lean's Lawrence Of Arabia (1962), a film I watched many many years ago as a youngster. What immediately struck me is the cinematography of the desert scenes, which is truly stunning.
It has its historical inaccuracies, but as an epic film, it's almost beyond compare. I hope to finish it tonight, bearing in mind that it's 3h 47m long.
By the way, Peter O'Toole was nominated for an Oscar numerous times and was finally given an honorary one in 2003. His speech alone is worth several of his screen performances.

I acquired it by alternative means, but it seems to be on Amazon Prime.

“Acquired by alternative means” used to mean “bought from a street vendor,” although even if that industry hadn’t dried up, I doubt that Lawrence of Arabia would have been in their inventory.
I’ll check Amazon Prime, thanks!

Can you still buy DVD s in the street? I haven't seen anyone selling them for a while.

-
I think streaming services ended the pirated dvd industry. Weird, but that somehow saddens me.
-
-
There's a shop in Martinez where you can still buy pirated DVDs. Never looks very busy though.

Several years ago , I used to buy DVDs , some CDs and the occasional computer program from a company called XTOP
I have just discovered they are still on the go.
Web site - https://www.xtopsite.com
DVDs are now 150 pesos per unit - if you buy 100 , you get a 50& discount!
Quality was always pretty good
They now offer a streaming service for 600 pesos a month - not too sure how this one works.
-
-
For a dying industry, this group certainly has a large inventory!

-
I was probably saving 20/25% on the street price back in the days....
I used to think these guys might actually be the wholesalers of all the dodgy DVD s in the capital.
The quality was always good . Once I got a bad copy - it got changed with no problem whatsoever.
-
-
I hope they are still in business when we get back. Streaming is fine most of the time, but there are times when I want to actually have the widget.

Now finding and watching a movie is not as difficult as it used to be. You just need the Internet and your desire. I really love to watch a movie on weekends. And I often look for films for the evening on the site https://123moviesss.la/. There is a large selection of genres and by the way, you can also see the latest innovations here.

This is a riveting film about the US gun lobby, money, power and corruption. I was engrossed by Jessica Chastain's performance.

Great suggestion. Having just re-watched Kyra Sedgwick’s great series The Closer for the second time, and getting near the final season of Criminal Minds, we’re looking for some good new things to watch.

I highly recommend this German film which is beautifully directed and the actors are simply first class. It opens your eyes to a Germany post war and the laws that were passed shortly afterwards, many of which protected the Nazis.
No English subtitles on Netflix so I had to watch with German dialogue and Spanish subs, but it was enough. A remarkable film.

I’d love to see it, but am not quick enough to follow either in German or with Spanish subtitles. It sounds formidable.
