If they are of Tren de la Costa, they are private.
I meant generally speaking. In the suburbs these huts are all over the place, so I'm curious as to who owns the land outside the house - the pavement (sidewalk).

I'd prefer nothing at all, but these vigilantes seem to be a deterrent and there's a lot of paranoia due to break-ins and other crimes.
Are the pavements outside residents' houses public or private? I really don't know.
Not that much of a deterrent if there have been break-ins and other crimes... or did you mean in general?
Realistically, in what position would the man in the hut be in to stop any crime? It's funny because criminals must think you have a legit security guard in the hut when in fact you have a lazy feck who would probably do nothing if he saw something happening. Bobocop.

There is a perception that these so called neighbourhood watch blokes deter crime, but in my experience it couldn't be further from the truth.
My mother in law was mugged literally outside our front door a couple of years back, Adri's boy had the number plates stolen from his car which was parked next to the hut and I had the number plate nicked from my bike when it was parked a metre from the front gate.
However, the neighbours are convinced that a man sleeping in a wooden hut allows them to sleep peacefully in their beds at night.
I, on the other hand, see him as nothing more than an invasion of privacy and only last night at 11pm had to warn him again about the racket he was making. I simply find it mind boggling.

Bugger that!! If it were like here I'd be moving.
Ahahaha!
He could ask for toll, too! I see many business opportunities!
What a nice upgrade for the neighborhood: a 3-D advertising board inhabited by the troll.
It's been two weeks.... what's taking them so long?

Sorted!
There was a delay for permission to be granted, not to mention the rain. Anyway, it should be finished this week and I shall definitely be recording the destruction of the old shed which will be demolished and removed by the local council. In fact, the council were very enthusiastic about getting rid of the old one and it came right from the top.
Who pays for the pillbox? The local council? Are they the ones collecting money for advertising, perhaps to defray their costs? Anything else would be outrageous. In fact, even THAT would be outrageous. Surely there are prohibitions against advertising signs being placed in residential zones?
A roofing contractor working on a neighbour's house offered to build it for free (no labour charge) providing he could put advertising on the walls. We all threw in our share for the materials, but I don't think the council is aware of the conditions, i.e. advertising.
I don't like the damn thing one bit, but I'm outvoted.
This whole affair is stranger than fiction. Talking about affairs...I take it he wants to nod off he has to sleep on a chair?
How much is the man in the hut paid for his services?

I'm not sure since we don't pay because he's effing useless. I think it's about $3000 per household and maybe ten neighbours chipping in.
The result has surpassed my expectation. It seems a legit booth now! I hope the man is happy and won't trash the place.
Yes it does. And you’ll get used to the advertising. It’s such an improvement over the other one!
Is the 'security guard' getting a uniform for when the President comes to do the opening ceremony?

I wonder how many times it can be inaugurated before it starts being 'old news'
I had the pleasure to see the new hut with my own eyes today. I was afraid I would get caught leaving a suspicious bag in @Splinter's front garden. However, the hut was empty, the advertising TECHOS was very neat and highly visible.
I was quite disappointed I couldn't see also the man... perhaps he is not appreciating the gift he was given...?
