In Argentina it's not loyalty to a party but to a person who thinks they are bigger than a party or even the country.

Peron is the perfect example and CFK is the second example

It reminds me of the old joke

An empire is ruled by an emperor

    A kingdom by a king.

Argentina a country . By Kristina

    Dark but apt joke.

You are perfectly describing the ideal autocracy, a cult following the USA is still experiencing 6 weeks after Election Day. Peron, Nestor, and Cristina led the way (OK, after He Who Can’t Be Named, in the 1930’s), but there is an appalling appetite in other countries for cult leaders who are all to happy to satisfy the unholy demand.

Certain areas are described as no man's land by locals and these include Quilmes, Bernal, La Matanza and many others. It's strange that most of them are Kirchnerite strongholds. Tough on crime? I don't think so, since these areas are run by the same mafia that lead.

Only yesterday in Bernal, a couple was about to enter their apartment building and just a few seconds before they managed to get in and shut the door, a car pulled up and armed men ran out towards the door.

    They were lucky.

In the UK I would be surprised if a crime was committed against me. Yes, even in Londond and alone at night. Here, I am surprised I have not been a victim of crime over 10 years. There are no-go areas in all cities, but in the UK a no-go area means you are asking for trouble. Here it means never leaving alive.

My daughter's boyfriend lives a block away from Fuerte Apache, one of the roughest places in Argentina. We won't let her stay there after 10pm and she must have an Uber to and from. She is 17 and has argued massively with us for months, but the area is just too dangerous. We were somewhat vindicated when her boyfriend's mother invited family to the house for her birthday and 70% of them said no chance are we leaving your house at 1am because it's too dangerous.

Uber drivers are reluctant to drive there at certain times too.

I’d be worried to death about her safety, even before 10 pm. I’m sure you wish the boyfriend came to your house instead of her ever going there. Ugh.

He does come here too, but obviously they want to split their time. Once she is in the house there it's fine. However, as we know from the news it's those 30 seconds walking from the car to the front door when they get you.

An 87 year old man hacked his 57 year old partner to death with a machete because he thought she had stolen US$1000 off him. (Castelar)

And a 79 year old man cut his 75 year old wife's throat with a carving knife until she bled to death and then turned himself in. (Garin)

Why didn’t these old guys just put the women on flights to the US? With more guns than people, and everyone with some kind of grudge, grievance and/or imbalance, they’d be dead in no time.

Yesterday a policeman shot and killed two armed thieves who were on a motorcycle and pointed a gun at him with the intention of robbing him. One died immediately and the other later in hospital.

He's now been detained for homicide and possible use of excess force as ordered by the local fiscal.

Clearly the fiscal is doing things by the book, but frankly, what does she expect a policeman to do when confronted by armed assholes like this?

It's a big problem, isn't it. If you have the means to defend yourself, you still cannot.

I am not an advocate of guns and would never carry personally, but even say fighting back and giving the robber a good old-fashioned kicking would result in you getting in trouble. It's all well and good saying just comply and hand over what the robbers want, but so often they will resort to violence either way.

There was a video from here where they followed a man into his driveway and took his phone etc. One of the group of robbers reapproched the victim and just shot him in the head. So, that guy complied and was executed for it. I am not saying he should have fought back, but if he had any means to wouldn't that have been better than taking a bullet to the head?

Another video I think from Brazil, but maybe it was here, showed a similar situation where a motochorro stopped someone in their car, took their money and phone and then literally unloaded their gun on them.

If that's the climate, then people with the means to fight back will obviously do so without hesitation. Someone who carries a gun who knows a robbery is likely to end in physical violence or death is obviously going to shoot first, ask questions later. What is excessive force here? I don't think it's excessive to eliminate the threat being posed to your own life. It comes down to another failure of government with robberies and violent crimes allowed to grow.

    I agree Semigoodlooking

It's entirely possible that the policeman would have been shot dead at point blank range anyway. He had little choice.

Still, at least that's two more scum off the streets, although many will now refer to them as victims.

Happy ending - 16 year old thief run over by resident who's mother was just robbed. The rat gets what he deserved.

Yes I did and he meant it. Mind you, when questioned by the police, I would say 'The man just jumped out in front of me officer and I couldn't avoid him!'

One gutsy delivery guy. But did I read that correctly, that he RAN OVER the thief, who survived?
