I really couldn't care less to be honest.
For me there are far more imprtant issues going on in the modern world than worrying about what went on in the past. I had a golliwog which I was very fond of when I was a kid....no doubt some will see that as being offensive/racist.
Now if you ate Robertson's marmalade as a kid and collected the golliwogs that came with the jar , you may have to go and plead for your life at the Court of European Justice

I used to collect them and send them off to get the metal badge....there was quite a choice IIRC I usually chose the footballer. They're probably very collectable nowadays.

Not sure probably around 10. I snaffled quite a few from the jars in Safeway. They used to just shove them down loose in the label at the back of the jars. Eventually they cottoned on to this dodge and made them part of the label so you had to use scissors to cut them out.

I'm in two minds. I do think certain people are taking it all far too bloody seriously especially those who resort to violence and criminal damage....most of them are just ignorant bastards taking advantage of the situation.
However time moves on and things change. Pretty sure us Scots have a few songs going about which contain inflammatory remarks about the English.
The US National Anthem must be under scrutiny: God Save The Queen hints at war with the “send her victorious,” but the Star Spangled Banner’s lyrics straightforwardly explode with rockets and bombs.
Seriously, what are the objections to Rule Britannia? “Britons never never (never) shall be slaves?” Is that offensive only because of the word ‘slaves?’

This morning the BBC announced that “Rule, Brittania” will not be sung at Last Night of the Proms.
“The rumours that the tunes were being dropped for political reasons because of concerns about lyrics extolling Britain's imperial past has led to a heated debate.
The BBC says the orchestra-only arrangement was how the tunes were first performed at the Proms in 1905, and it's clear the evening's two rousing sing-along tunes would sound odd and perhaps rather bleak with just a handful of singers spread around an empty hall.

This definitely sets a precedent.
While I’m in favor of removing certain statues (in the US, for instance, the removal of Civil War Confederate generals, who, let’s admit it, committed treason against the United States). But I think the statues should be considered individually, and the decision should not be made randomly by a group of citizens who take matters into their own hands.
Call me old fashioned. I also stand firmly against mobs, angry because their candidate didn’t win, smashing their way into the Capitol Building to prevent the legal certification of the citizens’ votes.
