Heres a refresher on some rules of thumb for masks: If youre in a private setting among other fully vaccinated people — or with low-risk individuals from a single household — you can take off your masks. To double-mask, place a surgical mask beneath a cloth mask, and make sure they're snug; its not a bad idea to check how they fit in a mirror before going out. Like KN95 masks, cloth masks designed with several built-in layers don't need to be doubled up. A nose wire for any kind of mask will help keep the covering secure on your face. Read more tips on mask fit from the CDC here.

More coronavirus cases are being reported worldwide than ever before. A key factor in the rise: the ferocity of India’s second wave.

The coronavirus pandemic has left more than 3 million dead around the world. Cases are rising rapidly. In India, this surge is not a wave but a vertical spike, with entire families infected and hospitals overwhelmed. The country accounts for about 1 in 3 of all new cases around the globe.

I wonder how things are in China?

  • The best thing that can happen to china is that this pandemic lasts a long time, but if by some miracle the western world comes up with a reliable vaccine, the day of reckoning will be knocking at china's front door.

coincidentally , India is the only country in the world that can stop or bottleneck china's commerce with the rest of the world due to their geography....

  • This looks like real progress:

“Coronavirus was no longer the leading cause of death in England and Wales last month for the first time since October, new figures show.

Office for National Statistics data show that Covid-19 was the third leading cause of death in both countries in March.

    The Telegraph, 22 April 2021

  • The Times, 25 April, 2021:

Senior scientists have called for an end to all coronavirus restrictions including mass testing and masks by June 21 and for "citizens to take back control of their own lives".In an open letter 22 signatories, who include Professor Robert Dingwall, a member of the government's vaccination committee, and Professor Carl Heneghan, head of Oxford University's Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, criticised the government for "confused and contradictory directions" in its management of the pandemic.

  • Boris Johnson is alleged to have said that he wanted bodies to pile high than have a third lockdown

I take media and newspaper reports with a huge pinch of salt, especially what a particular newspaper said about the Hillsborough disaster

We just have to wait to see how this pans out, since its a brexit newspaper, and all isn't going swimmingly with Brexit. It could be a case of the knife being stabbed in the back

    • Official Post

Probably taken out of context and also very probably said in jest if he even said it at all. I expect the message he wants to put across is simply that he wants to avoid a third lockdown as much as possible. He's known for being very flamboyant.

But let's not forget what happened in the UK Autumn last year with a sharp spike, but that was with a much lower percentage of vaccinations. As of today about 33 million people in the UK have been vaccinated.

Look at Argentina now in Autumn and the cases have gone sky high.

  • I keep returning to Worldometer, and can’t help thinking their ranking of 221 countries and territories would have more meaning if listed by percentage of population rather than by strict numbers.

As it is, the top 10 by numbers are:

    1. USA

    2. India

    3. Brazil

    4. France

    5. Russia

    6. Turkey

    7. UK

    8. Italy

    9. Spain

    10. Germany

    (Argentina is now #11)

But listed as percentage of population, the numbers give a rather different picture of how bad the situation has been in some countries with smaller populations:

    1. Andorra

    2. Montenegro

    3. Czech Republic

    4. San Marino

    5. Gibraltar

    6. Slovenia

    7. Luxembourg

    8. USA

    9. Aruba

    10. Bahrain

(Argentina’s percentage is roughly half the average of these 10 countries’ percentages)

Yet the important numbers right now are which countries have the most new cases. Worldometer isn’t showing a number of new cases for Argentina, but the three countries we keep hearing on the news, as having alarming numbers of new cases, are

    1. India

    2. Brazil

    3. Argentina.

  • Considering that all of the top 7 really don't have much of a population, but considering that the USA is 8th, I think that tells a whole new story of really how bad it was there. I feel sorry for the citizens who were shielding because an incompetent POTUS was denying it to "stop the people panicking", and blaming a country for the pandemic, rather than doing something for the population as a whole.

It also looks likely that the USA are going to break the 600K death mark

    https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/

At the moment, it is 28K shy.

The death rate in the UK is slowing down considerably

  • The most interesting thing from the UK press over the weekend is the hint that former advisor Dominic Cummings has recordings of various meetings.

The shit might very well hit the fan....

That Cummings bloke looks a right not to be trusted evil bastard....if he's been secretly recording meetings it says it all.

Exactly. The US stands out in this list of tiny countries, doesn't it. Two days ago we had the anniversary of the former president's great proclamation that the virus could be killed by either injecting disinfectant into the lungs or inserting a very bright UV light into the body (orifice unspecified). On camera. With at least one deer-in-the-headlights member of his handpicked COVID team sitting on stage, wishing to vanish but indeed saying nothing to refute the load of garbage he was unspooling.

The previous administration left no plan for vaccine rollout or distribution, so on January 20, the new administration quickly put together a plan for equitably distribute doses to the states. In three months, 31% of the adult population has been fully vaccinated (41% have received at least one shot). But because of failure of leadership to acknowledge and combat the virus for the first 10 months, we started 2021 with half a million cases, and have a long way to go.

Currently, nearly half of white, republican men say that they are not planning to get the vaccine. Macho, right?
