  • From the NYT this morning:

This chart ranks the countries with the most confirmed new cases over the past week, adjusted for population size, and treats each U.S. state as if it were a country. (Many states are larger in both landmass and population than some countries.)

  • The prevailing thought in the ever-evolving advice on mask wearing is that while your mask protects me and mine protects you, our own masks also protect us.

In other words, your own mask helps prevent your droplets from being expelled into the air, protecting others (egress). BIG, big help. And, depending on the mask’s design, fit, fabric, etc, droplets expelled by others can possibly also be blocked by your mask (ingress).

As your Atlantic article points out, “The community use of masks for source control is a “public good”: something we all contribute to that eventually benefits everyone—but only if almost everyone contributes, which can be a challenge to persuade people to do.

Rice.. OK!!! I understand the egress/ingress but if I am wearing a mask for my own protection. should I then be wearing an N95 type of mask. I realize that different types of masks will slow

down dispersal of the virus, but the wearing of some masks, without social distancing, for one's protection, would be iffy to say the least. I do wear a cloth mask, but can I truly say this

mask is giving me the protection I need?

  • with your lung situation, you should probably call your doctor to ask his advice. N95’s are quite hot, so while s/he might recommend a N95 for some situations, don’t let go of your cloth mask.

Rice... Thank you, I will see if my Dr. can offer some advice. Everything is just so damn crazy now, I need to make a trip to Alabama, but it scares me to just even consider.

I chose you for some advice, because I know you have traveled more than I ever will. Stay safe!!!

  • Hydroxychloroquine (HCL) has been safely used for malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Studies are only now being done about efficacy and safety for COVID-19 patients, since this is a NOVEL coronavirus.

Note serafina ’s post about side effects.

hairyscotsman , The New York Times daily update also singles out Sweden:

    • Sweden — which allowed the virus to spread largely unhindered — has Europe’s worst outbreak, and its economy has not benefited. “They literally gained nothing,” one economist said.

Well that is contrary to every other piece of information. They most certainly have not had the worst outbreak in europe . The figures per head of population are east to come by online.

i will see if i can find the article re economy.

supposed side effects...when you have seen through the lies so often its difficuilt to take anything they say at face value as there is always an agenda at play. There was a group of highly respected medical professionals who testified in front of senate to its healing properties re covid...

The drug remedevir that usa has just bought was in a video back in march re the wuhan lab and chinese connection....it was patented by a branch of the communist party..Yes i know its being produced by another firm but the patent is held by the chinese.

The mask will not protect you from catching the virus. This is fact and comes from all informed sources inc WHO. It is designed to limit who you may infect if YOU have the virus as will limit the virus on droplets should you sneeze.

The latest information out today and admitted by the WHO is that aerosol contagion is a far bigger threat than they previously admitted in effect making masks next to useless as you can breath it in and out if you have the virus as the virus is so small in comparison to the masks holes . In effect trying to stop a mosquito with a chain link fence.

  • hairyscotsman , I’m having trouble catching up with your scattershot approach. I did read your Bloomberg link, above, about Sweden, and noted that it hardly recommended the Swedish approach’s results.

According to Johns Hopkins University data, Sweden has had 41 deaths per 100,000. That compares with 31 in the U.S. and 10 in neighboring Denmark.

Swedish shops, schools, gyms and restaurants have all remained open throughout the crisis. Instead, the government has encouraged citizens to observe social distancing rules....

But the policy appears to be costing more lives here and now. It’s also raised concerns in other European Union countries as they start opening borders. Cyprus recently made clear it doesn’t want Swedish residents entering the island. Sweden’s Nordic neighbors have also voiced concerns.”

Not exactly a recipe for success.

The pharma industry is skewed, but since hydroxychloriquine has been around for several years, I doubt its side effects were underestimated to make it the miracle drug of covid-19.

Science is a learning process and as you can find several specialists ready to testify to its healing properties, you will find an equal number ready to testify the opposite, too. If there were a clear winner, we would have known by now.

Hydroxychloroquine retinopathy — implications of research advances for rheumatology care

Retinal toxicity is a very rare side effect of the hydroxychloroquine therapy, but when it has occurred, vision loss may be permanent and may progress even years after the cessation of medication. Patients would be examined every 3 months, then annually, until they are stabled.
