Oh right....need to remember that one wee man.
Today's DIY is using silicone sealant by blocking all those holes the ants and cockroaches are using to invade us, since this hot weather brings them out.
Those tiny ants can scurry in and out of the tiniest holes.
Yes we've also had an invasion of cockroaches recently. The ants have still to appear thankfully. The wife puts down some sort of pesticide gel stuff on the floor at each corner of the kitchen/living room - the rooms that seem to be affected the most. They eat the stuff which makes them drowsy then the the dogs finish them off.
On Friday I finally got around to painting the house, starting with the living room which is about 8m x 4m and accumulated grimes on the walls and ceiling from about nine years
What with streaks running down the walls from where rainwater had come in, cracks and all sorts of other defects, it turned out to be very relaxing and I thoroughly enjoyed doing it. It's completely transformed the room, particularly since it's quite a dark area and the brighter paint helps enormously. I sometimes wonder how I let it slide for so long. I managed to get away with one coat, except the dodgy areas, but two coats on the ceiling, using a broomstick handle.
Next is the kitchen, then our bedroom and finally, white gloss on the doors.

Obviously, things are all over the place at the moment.
Yep it makes a difference. Our living room badly needs done as does the entrance hall which I had to stop preparing due to a burst pipe in the brick wall. Weeks after the plumber fixed it and it's still a touch damp so no point starting it until I know for sure it won't be a waste of time.
Which brand of paint do you use Splinter? The wife won't buy anything else other than ALBA.
Alba , the perfect paint for a Scottish household !
Splinter, did you add a touch of black paint?
I read about this trick recently, told it to my husband who also didn’t know it... but later remember that my grandfather, who was a laborer/mason/jack of all trades used it, too.
It’s supposed to make the plain white less aseptic.

Never heard about that trick, serafina . Intriguing. To a litre of white paint, how much black? A spoonful?
I can't see me trying it....guaranteed to end up with a tin of grey paint.
Me too!

Yes, I used toner. A little black and some ochre to kill the white.
We bought 20 litres of Loxon white and I've already used 10 litres just in the living room.
I am glad Splinter could clear that I am not a crazy white paint buster! Some pro painters prefer ochre, some black.
Interesting to use a mix of the two! Way to go, Splinter!
Did you paint free-hand Argentina style or did you cover the door frames?
We did cover, but when we had to hire painters for our last place, they painted ‘Michelangelo style’ with just their hand. I was not impressed of the result. I still swear at them every time I see the poorly made borders or the painting going over where it shouldn’t. 😡

I used masking tape on everything, including the door frames. The trouble is, once you've painted the walls, the doors end up looking even worse and the yellow patina comes out even more, so you have no choice about painting the doors afterwards.
I used a roller on the walls and ceiling, but a brush where several coats were needed and I'll be using a brush on the doors.

Don't understand this bit...
Never use tape as I have a very steady hand. I actually find doing that part of it quite satisfying. When we had Christian the painter painting out at the countryside place he had blue tape everywhere....the missus was always having to buy new rolls of it.
I meant that the professional painters we hired did not use masking tape and made a mess because they thought they had the same hand as Michelangelo (painter author of the painted ceiling of the Sistine chapel)

I'm not Cool Hand Luke, so tape is essential.

Strangely enough I never ever saw a ''professional'' painter in the UK using masking tape when painting around door frames either. They never made a mess and if they did they would clean it immediately before it dried.
I suspect the ones you have had weren't as professional as they said they were.
