Chester Williams, South Africa’s 1995 Rugby World Cup hero, dies aged 49

  • Because Apartheid had ended only the year before that World Cup, perhaps many black children never had the equipment or opportunity to train for all the years necessary to become a world-class player?

It's only a guess. Our image of poor kids is usually that they spend hours playing ball with any object available, and become incredibly skillful athletes. But the image of any leisure time at all, let alone structured team play might be a middle class fantasy.
