Internet connection issues in the morning

    We live in Capital and we have Telecentro.

    My computer has issues with internet in the morning. I think it may be a DNS issue but I am not sure.

    What happens is that I always leave my computer on, when in the morning I sit in front of it, the email is not downloading but I can navigate some websites (such as FB and another forum related to my work), but not others (like this forum and other various websites).

    The only solution I have found to this is to restart my computer - this fixes everything.

    What kind of 'wrong' setting can trigger this behavior? I am using an iMac with the latest OS installed.

    We have been with intermittent and deadly slow internet for the last 15-20 days. Telecentro say they will offer a discount on our next bill, however, I had to go to an internet cafè to be able to work, used all my mobile data (I needed to send email quickly), lost a lot of time trying to send emails (and checking if they were sent) and doing online stuff (and checking if they went through or not).

    I am wishing all the worst to the Telecentro liars! Every day they say that 'tomorrow is the day it will be solved', but there have been 15 tomorrows!!!

    (well, the first calls were AS USUAL dismissed with dumb questions like 'is your cable connected? Are the indicators green?' etc)

    I am guessing we may get into contradictory thoughts here. However, it has always been my understanding turning a laptop (or any computer) off every day is worse for it than leaving it in sleep mode (hibernate is better). The booting cycle is more streessful on system resources. I didn't want to be running down complete the wrong path so just did some quick research and almost anywhere I can find suggests turning off the PC at night is unneccesary and more taxing.

    That said, shutting it down every so often is certainly neccesary, while if you're someone who only uses the computer for 30 mins per day (I don't know, checking emails maybe) or even less (once every three days) then turning if off for the remaining time makes sense. I use my PC around 10 hours each day and through multiple sessions.

    Telecentro is utter garbage. I pay for the 100 megas (it was the best package at the time) and it is intermittently very slow. Does not reach my bedroom, and disconnects. We went through a spell of it disconnecting at least once a weekend for several months. I run out of fingers and toes if I count the amount of times I have had to go out to work because my internet suddenly went.

    I had the bill discounts as well, but to be honest they are meaningless to me. I prefer the internt to work.

    We've had a lot of internet outages over the last few weeks. Been driving the wife potty when she tries to print something as her wifi printer is no longer recognised when back online. I'm about as useful as a chocolate tea pot when she asks me to sort it out.

    The only reason I wouldn't leave a laptop switched on overnight is because of the possibility of overheating. Further, the vents underneath should be always be clear. Other than that, it's personal choice really and since I rarely use mine, I switch it off anyway when I've finished with it. I use a PC 99% of the time.

    I'm glad we went with Claro, then.

    serafina maybe you should look at changing?

    Maybe you should phone them and see if they do CapFed?

    But it's the same priniciple on desktop, no? It still takes more resources to turn off and reboot.

    Overheating shouldn't be a problem as the PC/laptop is in hibernation or sleep anyway. If it is running hot in sleep mode then I think it has problems.

    I even shut down my laptop when I go out during the day for more than an hour and always shut it down and unplug it last thing at night. Just a habit I've got used to doing in the UK never mind here. Silly probably given the amount of dodgy Argentine bought appliances that are kept plugged in 24/7 and far more likely to spontaneously combust.

    I used to shut down my laptop when I was a Windows user, then when I switched to Mac a friend told me it doesn't need to be shut down like a Windows computer, so I have always left it in Sleep mode.

    The laptop will use some energy also in sleep mode, and you can wake up and found it has run out of battery, so that you need to leave it plugged for a few minutes before it is able to come back to life.

    With the desktop computer, I reboot it maybe once per week, if it has gotten slower (usually, Office for Mac becomes sluggish and it slows the whole computer down).

    This week I went for the first time in my life to a coworking space. But that makes for another thread as the experience was okay, but not overwhelming (I'd much rather work at home and pay in full my internet bill, like Semigoodlooking said).

    There are several reasons to not trust your internet providers DNS. It is easy to switch to one of the more recommended DNS servers, either only on you own machine or at your router for your entire home.

    Even better, do not allow your internet provider to sniff any of your traffic. Cloudflare is the simplest way available to avoid this problem.
