Do the configuration now or anytime before the October date, just get it done before you miss the opportunity. If forced to be stuck with Windows 10.
Of course, the free upgrade to win11 is better for the people that have the capable hardware.

I will get the upgrade done, though in this age of instant change, it will mean driving an hour each way to take my laptop for the update appointment, then doing the drive again to retrieve the computer. Four hours of driving and $120 for the upgrade will be the cost of living in a remote location and not being electronically self-sufficient!

If your upgrade service person is not knowledgeable enough to use Microsoft official remote assistance to connect to your machine to do the simple upgrade, then they are questionable about hiring. Be sure they use only that service and not any other type of remote control. Splinter or one of his Dave's Computer Tips contacts probably can do that.
Are you sure your computer is not compatible with Windows 11? That is the better upgrade option. Your remote help person could evaluate that.
Secondly, for that cost including the cost of your driving time, you should just buy a new Windows 11 computer.

Yes but Rice is indicating that the process to sign up for the extension is too technically complicated, so will pay the in-town shop person $120 to do that work. If I understood correctly.
Both paths, either updating to win11 or registraion for 1-year win10 extension, requires similar effort. Actually I imagine Win11 upgrade is easier, but we do not know if her hardware supports that option.

Bought the same month in the same place. Both originally Windows 10
We have been able to change one over to Windows 11 but the other says it is not possible as there is not enough disc space.
Is there a solution?

If you receive a message that says your PC isn't compatible there are ways around this by creating a bootable USB pendrive with Rufus which can add a hack to bypass hardware checks.
Look in Windows explorer and check how much free disk space you have. You can always delete stuff you don't need.

Yes, the solution is to delete or temporarily remove files. Go on a hunt for the biggest files in your documents folder that you probably do not need anymore. Delete. If you feel everything is too important, then you can temporarily move them to a big USB drive. After all that, be sure to empty the trash, reboot one more time, and try the update again.

Or she could use Flyby11, if the laptop is not compatible with W11, and do the upgrade herself or keep W10, as long as she wants and dual-boot with Linux Mint or trash Windows, and use Linux.

a month or so ago , I removed all files and it still wont do anything.
Still tells me its not compatible for W11
Which is strange as I am typing this on the very same machine ( same model - same disk etc) tthat is usinbg W11 with no problems

I had the same issue with my wife's PC and I know why.
Microsoft has moved the goalposts in that they have removed certain processors since Win 11 was launched. It may once have been compatible...

Wait, it says not compatible or it says not enough space?
Do you see this message at the start of the update settings process, or the “not enough space” error that occurs later during the update?

Strange. Sounds like a case of goalposts moving as Splinter suggested . Still, download and install the PC Health Check app from windows that their instructions describe to verify win11 eligiblity here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/…57-88258df6812b
