It really IS lovely, and what a perfectly placed fortress. I believe I remember reading that Edinburgh Castle was attacked more than any other castle, by armies that thought they could be more successful than all the ones that had tried before them.

Very refined building. The chairs, cups of tea, spoons, plates and all the complementary things for a Tea House were designed specifically by Mackintosh and the Mc Donalds sisters. One of them was Mackintosh's wife. The germans call it a "total work of Art" (Gesamtkunstwerk) and he influenced the Vienna Sezession group, contemporary trend in Austria.

Up north, down south.
Where north and south start has always been a topic of conversation in the UK, more so for northerners. Many would have you think that the north starts north of Watford, but that's southerners whinging again. True north starts somewhere south of Sheffield and whatever you do, don't confuse Yorkshire with Lancashire and/or West Yorkshire with North or South Yorkshire.
They're a bit touchy up north and and regard southerners as lager drinking nancy boys.

I find this quite surprising, and hope you won’t think I’m being a smarty boots when I ask what difference it makes?
I’m thinking, for example, of the importance of the north-south dividing line to the Irish and even, historically, in the US because of its Civil War. And of course there is the question of Scottish sovereignty that keeps coming up, with very strong opinions. But apart from Scotland, northern UK and southern UK? Why do they care? Are they still nursing centuries-old grievances or are there cultural differences that make a difference?

Without being a smarty pants Brit, one has to have a pint with a Northerner to appreciate the joke. It's not really meant as a serious view that makes a difference to anything, but the War of the Roses is still being fought between Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Yes, seriously.
Surely you can recall that I've often warned not to confuse a Yorkshireman with a Lancastrian?
