It's always fascinated me how Stonehenge was actually built and this article from English Heritage helps to explain how it's thought the henge was built.
How the lintels were joined is even more interesting.
Stonehenge, in my point of view, was the first monument to celebrate the seasons, the changes of position that the sun does when it appears in the horizon, and told the Neolithic men when to put the seeds and when to crop. Also marks the sense of "place".
For further information, Christian Norberg Schulz "Genius loci" is an excellent study on how we create places. Heidegger had also wrote a lot about that in "Building, dwelling, thinking" of 1951.
This is completely fascinating. The more one learns about Stonehenge, the more one wants to know.
