I have always been in the habit of putting both the lid and the seat down, but here it's the opposite. Everyone leaves them up.
Apparently this is more hygienic but I'm not sure about that at all.
What do others think?

I was brought up to leave the seat and lid down after using the toilet.

I do the same procedure. And also keep clean the toilet itself. Sometimes the water flush is not enough.
three older sisters , so I was properly educated.
Seat down at all times after one has paid the visit . And scrupulously clean at all times.
This "rule" never seemed fair to me. Why should the guy have to move the seat when he is finished, but the gal does not have to? And why do they get so angry about it? Do women really sit down without first checking?!
The answer lies with the cover, not the seat. If everybody has to put the cover down when finished, then everyone suffers this added minor inconvenience on an equal basis. Life is not fair, but in this case it can be brought a bit closer to that goal.

The only reason I asked this question is because I've noticed this to be a trait at every Argentine home I visit. And it doesn't seem to be a man thing either.
Man thing around this house is the lid is down, if one does not want the woman thing beating on one's head!!
I love reading an all-male discussion about this!
Some feminine input would be good then. Pros and cons, that kind of thing.
Seat and lid down: best.
Seat up will always be a loser.
Have to admit out at the countryside place I rarely use the inside toilet. Unless I'm in the house, if I need a piss I find a tree or bush.
Ah. In Louisiana that is called “watering the azaleas.”
We in Arkansas will sometimes refer it to "draining the lizard".
Ha ha, that's a good one, daniel
In Glasgow it's known as ''weak bladder your honour''!!

A tad OTT if you ask me but the missus puts this lot on after I've been in.
