The U.S. has reached a deal to provide 500 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine to about 100 countries over the next year. |
The plan, which President Biden is expected to announce as early as Thursday, comes as the U.S. has faced mounting pressure to do more to address the global vaccine shortage and the disparities in vaccination rates between rich and poor nations. |
People familiar with the deal said the U.S. will pay for the doses at a “not-for-profit” price. The first 200 million doses would be distributed this year, and 300 million would be distributed by the middle of next year, they said. |

All a bit too late......
All a bit too late......
Not sure it's too late, the pandemic will not finish any time soon.
We will need vaccinations for some time to come.

Looks like it according to what they're saying. I'm not so sure though, unless they think the ones they're giving away are no longer working?

They have a surplus of vaccines expiring soon, so they are giving them away where they are still needed.

Not sure a completely cynical reaction is actually warranted here, although a certain amount of skepticism is always healthy.
Remembering that a government’s first obligation is to safeguard its own people, no responsible country would give away doses purchased specifically for its own people as long as demand in that country had not been met.
In the US, for a variety of reasons, many people either are reluctant to be vaccinated or are dead-set against vaccination. As demand has slowed, the conversation has turned to the importance of getting vaccine to poorer countries rather than holding on to it for people who don’t want to take it anyway.
An initial round of doses were already promised to neighboring Mexico and Canada, and to covax, for distribution throughout the world. At the G7 mtg, Biden referred to our “human obligation,” as he pledged that the US will PURCHASE another 500 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine, to donate to poorer countries. Today, the G7 leaders are expected to pledge that, together, they will donate a billion doses.
Adding this note to above post:
Biden’s leadership in this area is part of what is called the Arsenal of Democracy: giving help to other countries to help them achieve their own goals.
A wealthy friend of ours who lives in a beachside mansion in Uruguay insisted on her staff being vaccinated - one of whom became infected - but refuses to get the jab herself on the basis that it does more harm than good. She also believes the Covid pandemic is all a ruse perpetrated by The New World Order and/or The Illuminati.
I kid you not.
And news just in that an 86 year old woman has died at a vaccination centre in San Lorenzo following her second dose and literally while waiting the obligatory 15 minutes before leaving for home. As yet, no indications have been given for the cause of her death.
Also, the head of security at a Cordoba hospital died on Monday from Coronavirus complications in spite of having received two doses of Sputnik V.
...however, our wealthy friend is happy to take Invermectin, a drug used on horses and cows, but not recommended by the FDA and others, except in clinical trials.
The argument appears to be that millions have taken the Invermectin pills in Africa which is why, they say, there are so few cases over there.
On the other hand...

A few weeks ago, I went to get a neck massage and the guy was putting on the mask only to open and close the building door to accompany clients in and out of his studio. In the massage room, he told me I could take it off during the massage (I was face down on the table). I declined and he told me he got covid-19 with high fever for two days, but he took chlorhexidine and it was over.
I have never returned since.
I know my dumb tissue mask is worth nothing, and that going anywhere is a risk. But I won't dive in head first.

On the bright side, while she chooses to be vulnerable to virus her staff might bring in, she is protecting them from infection by her!
Heather Cox Richardson letter, 13 June 2021:
“To illustrate the ability of democracies to answer the world’s needs, the G7 focused on helping the world recover from the coronavirus. It pledged another billion doses of vaccine over the next year in addition to the billion already pledged”
The G7 summit was called an "unforgivable moral failure" by Gordon Brown after leaders failed to come up with a plan to vaccinate the world, despite Boris Johnson's pledge to do so by the end of next year.
The mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, is offering people who receive a coronavirus jab the chance to win cars as daily deaths in the Russian capital hit a four-month high and suspicion of vaccines remains widespread.
The Times, 14 June, 2021
It is becoming clear that the hundreds of millions of doses being sent to third world countries are nowhere near enough. The G7 countries need to send BILLIONS of doses to countries without access or means.
Right now, the vaccination rate in the continent of Africa is below 2%. Completely unacceptable.
For those hoping to fly into Heathrow, The BBC is reporting that the airport will try fast-track lanes for travelers who have been vaccinated
Tomorrow my mother will get her second shot of Astrazeneca, which in Italy is currently administered only to 2nd dose-rs as it is being discontinued. She is fairly anxious and for a good reason, imho! My aunt said her second shot of Astra was no walk in the park and she felt bad after 2 weeks and for another fortnight. Ouch!
I am just glad to be with her to assist in case she develops any side effect.

Breaking news in the Washington Post:
WHO calls for moratorium on booster shots of coronavirus vaccine through September, citing global disparity |
“WHO officials said Wednesday that a moratorium is necessary while poorer countries struggle to access resources even for high-risk populations such as health-care workers and the elderly.” |
Yes, yes, there are many reasons to criticize the WHO and also COVAX. But they make a valid point about the disparity in vaccine availability. Sharing more widely is the right thing to do.
And from a strictly selfish perspective, first world countries should work to vaccinate people in poor countries because this is a GLOBAL situation with repercussions for the entire world if parts of it are unprotected and new variants continue to develop.
Is it possible for countries to look beyond their own borders and remember that we are One World?
