The Bolivian lady who sells me excellent bananas told me that they'd just gone up to $150/kg, which was pretty shocking.
So four five of the buggers are now costing around $100! Lucky banana.

Wonder how much bananas are in the UK? Despite being here for 12 years I can't get out of the habit of comparing prices here to the UK.
Bananas have always seemed out of proportion in price here. If they can be shipped from Central America to the US and be sold for the equivalent of 100-120 pesos per kilo, why do bananas coming here from Ecuador (or closer?) cost more than that?
I concur with serafina : the prices seem very arbitrary.
exactly.......is the same as the coffee as we earlier talked about.......absurd that something is a lot cheaper 12.000 km away, across the ocean.......
Just saw bananas by me in my absolute low-cost place: 130 pesos!!!!!
The coffee stuff really pisses me off.....since I adore coffee.....
Not so long ago, bananas were about $40/Kg, but then time is relative here as Mr Spock once said.

I'll bet that was when the dollar exchange rate was hovering around 30 pesos. It is uncanny how many prices of basic groceries seem to track along with the exchange rate rather than the inflation rate.

Like everything else...that's the biggest problem here. Until that gets fixed I see little changing. The new lot will no doubt do it but not in the right way. Thus leaving it for some other poor sod to sort out in future years.
I just came across this bill for a meal we had at the Mirador restaurant in Olivos port back in June 2006. Not bad for AR$51, but here's what it would cost today using some average figures:
Table $25 x 2 $50
Beer, draught $100
Lopez Malbec $300
Hamburger $450 x 2 $900
Chips $250
Total (conservative estimate) AR$1600
Jaw-dropping inflation in the intervening 15 years.
On the other hand, for those who have US dollars, in 2006, @ about 2.5 pesos/dollar, the cost was more or less $20 US. With today’s blue rate of about 140 pesos/dollar, a bill of 1600 pesos would be more or less $11 US.
Good illustration of how inflation has really slammed people who earn in pesos while it has made prices cheaper for those who earn in dollars, pounds sterling, or euros.

Those who earn in pesos just ask for more. Which starts the whole merry-go-round again.
